Strength · La Force

Not the strength that overpowers, the strength that gentles. Courage worn soft enough to be trusted.

The Chariot The Hermit
VIII

Reading

Strength is the eighth trump, and its picture is deliberately anticlimactic: no sword, no army, a woman closing a lion’s jaws with her bare hands, unhurried. The whole argument of the card is that real power looks like ease. Above her floats the lemniscate: force that never runs out, because it never strains.

Real power looks like ease.

The lion is not beaten; it is befriended. Upright, Strength is patience with your own animal nature, appetite, anger, fear, governed by warmth rather than shut in a cage. It is the discipline that declines to announce itself.

Reversed, the hand tightens. The same energy curdles into force, or into the self-doubt that mistakes gentleness for weakness and grabs for control instead. The remedy is the card’s own image: loosen the grip, and the lion stays.
