Five blades carried off; cleverness on soft feet.
Reading
A man carries five swords away from a camp, both hands curled around bare blades, not one hilt in his grip. The hilts fan up and away, three tipped back toward the tents, two riding ahead, every point angled down at the ground he is crossing. Two more stand driven upright in the earth where he left them. He is on his toes, both heels lifted, head turned back over his shoulder. Red cap, black curls, olive tunic, blue hose, red boots with fur at the ankle, all against a flat chrome-yellow field. The tents are blue and red canvas under grey peaks, hung with pennants. Far off to the left, past a tent and a pole, a row of small dark figures stands in the distance.
The corner of his mouth is up. Both hands are full of edges.
The Golden Dawn seats the decan with the Moon in Aquarius and keeps the title Lord of Unstable Effort. Waite lists design, attempt, wish, hope, confidence, and in the same breath a plan that may fail.
Upright, the tradition reads cleverness that takes the side door. Strategy, discretion, the quiet exit, the thing done without asking permission. Sometimes it is theft. Sometimes it is the only sane move left in a camp that was never going to hand over what you needed. Which one it is, the card leaves open.
Reversed, readers split. Many name exposure: the plan coming back around, the swords returned to the ground they came from. Waite goes gentler: counsel, advice, the thing said out loud at last. Exposure and confession are one event told from two sides.
Whatever he took, he did not take everything. He cannot use one blade he carries until he sets it down.
