The Moon · Candra
The mind as mirror, mother, memory, the tide in the chest.

Candra is manas, the mind as receiving surface, and the kāraka or significator of the mother and of everything in a person that reflects before it reasons. Classically the bright Moon counts as a benefic and the waning Moon as something wearier, sattva dimming as the light thins: one lake, more or less lit.
She rules Karka (Cancer) and reaches exaltation at three degrees of Vṛṣabha, where the mind settles because there is ground under it and food on the table. She falls at the same degree of Vṛśchika, the sign that lets nothing rest on the surface. Her Vimśottarī daśā runs ten years.
Jyotiṣa treats her as the working light rather than the lesser one. The nakṣatras are counted from her, the daśās begin from her, and the classical texts read the whole chart a second time from the Moon’s seat, as if she were a second ascendant.
