House 4 · Bandhu

Bandhu bhāva is the floor of the chart, the lowest of the four angles, the point the whole figure rests on. The tradition also calls it Sukha bhāva, the house of contentment, and reads it for everything a life leans back into: home, mother, land, the vehicles that carry you, the heart at rest. Its kāraka is Candra, the Moon, which is why the fourth keeps lunar hours. It governs the private weather rather than the public one.

Read the fourth for the first shelter and the one carried afterward. Classically it holds the mother, the chest and lungs, immovable property, and the plain question of whether a person can actually rest or only schedule it. As a kendra it is structural: what sits here braces or unsettles the entire chart, quietly, from underneath.

A well-placed fourth is read as a life with somewhere to land between its efforts, roots that hold. Malefics or affliction here are seen to keep the question of home open, sometimes for decades, and the tradition names the ache without diagnosing it: the unrooted feeling, the hearth gone cold. Foundations can be repaired. Never quickly, and never from the roof.
