What the self makes, children, play, the mind's bright work.

Putra bhāva takes its name from the child, and in the classical count children come first: the fifth is read as the house of progeny, and with them everything a person begets rather than builds, from poems and romances to students, games, and the bright idea that arrives like a guest. Its kāraka is Guru (Jupiter), significator of children and wisdom, and Jyotiṣa counts the house among the trikoṇas, the dharma trine of the first, fifth, and ninth, one of the chart’s places of grace.
The older texts also read the fifth for pūrva-puṇya, merit carried from before: the storehouse where a life runs oddly lucky or fertile without visible cause, held in the tradition as an inheritance of an unseen kind. The same house carries buddhi, the discriminating mind, and the mantras a person keeps, so devotion and intelligence sit beside play here.
Read it for the quality of a person’s delight: what they make freely, how they love while love is still a game, what they teach without being asked. Its classical shadow is spectacle, creation performed for applause until the play goes stiff and the well runs dry. The fifth is said to keep its fortune as long as it keeps its play.
