House 10 · Karma
The visible work, what a life does in open sky.

Karma bhāva sits at the top of the chart, the point overhead where a life acts in open sky. Career lives here, but the older word carries more weight: karma, the deed, what a person actually does. The tradition assigns it four kārakas, because work wears at least four faces. Sūrya for authority, Budha for trade and skill, Guru for counsel, Śani for the long labor that earns the standing.
Read the tenth for what stands in public: office, reputation, rank, the deed that outlives the intention behind it. Classically it counts as both kendra, an angular pillar of the chart, and upachaya, a house that grows with effort, which is why it repays showing up more than almost any other. Like every bhāva it names a domain of life rather than a fixed fate, and Makara, the natural tenth sign, lends it the temperament of a long climb.
Its shadow is the ladder taken for its own sake, rank mistaken for worth, the office that eats the person holding it. Classical texts hold that grahas in the tenth are seen: whatever stands here, the world eventually meets. The house asks one question, and keeps asking it. What did you do?
