Śani is the slow teacher, the graha the tradition names the great malefic and, in nearly the same breath, the giver of everything built to last. His signature is tamas, and his instrument is subtraction: whatever a life leans on that cannot hold weight, he removes, on a schedule nobody agreed to. Classically he is kāraka of longevity, of grief, and of labor, the years and the losses and the work that earns them.

He owns Makara and Kumbha, exalts (uccha) in Tulā at 20°, and falls (nīcha) in Meṣa at the same degree. The tradition reads that geometry plainly: judgment does its best work where it can weigh, and its worst where nothing will wait. His mahādaśā runs nineteen years on the Vimśottarī clock, and his sāḍe-sātī, the seven-and-a-half-year passage of Saturn over the natal Moon, is the classical byword for a season of tempering.

Read Śani for where a chart is asked to become honest: the craft that cannot be charmed, the delay that turns out to have been the training. Well placed, he is read as endurance, a kept word, a thing finished. Afflicted, the same discipline is said to harden into dread. The Matrix rhymes him with The World, arcanum 21, the completed round where limit is revealed as form. His question does not change. What will you still be doing in twenty years?
