Classically Śukra is the lesser benefic, the graha, or planet, of the yes. He is kāraka of partnership, of desire, of the arts, rajasic by temperament, the pull that reaches toward what it loves. The old stories make him guru of the asuras, the one counselor who held mṛtasañjīvanī, the science of reviving the dead. It is the tradition’s way of saying that pleasure, kept in right measure, restores, and that the same appetite ungoverned is what the demons keep him for.

He owns Vṛṣabha and Tulā, the earth-house where worth turns tangible and the air-house where desire settles into proportion. In Mīna he reaches exaltation at 27°, love that has stopped keeping accounts. At the same degree in Kanyā he falls, love grown too fond of the ledger. His Vimśottarī mahādaśā runs twenty years, the longest the system gives to any graha.

Where a chart wants reading for taste, for adornment, for the terms on which a person consents to join another, the tradition looks to Śukra. Well placed, he is said to give the taste that makes a life habitable. Afflicted, the reading turns toward sweetness as the whole diet, comfort chosen over the truth, charm in place of substance. He rhymes with the Empress, the gardened world that increases by tending. His question stays exact. What do you actually desire, and can you bear to receive it?
