House 8 · Randhra

Randhra bhāva is the closed door in the classical count: death and longevity first, and beneath those everything that moves out of sight. Inheritances, other people’s money, the occult and the researched, secrets kept and secrets uncovered, the slow transformations no one schedules. Its kāraka is Śani, and the tradition classes the eighth among the dusthanas, the houses of difficulty. It is read as the deepest of the three.

Jyotiṣa reads the eighth for a person’s relation to what cannot be controlled: how endings are met, what happens in the chapters between chapters, what is inherited unasked. The natural eighth sign is Vṛśchika, the covered well, and the house keeps that flavor whatever sign falls on it. Classically a graha placed here works underground; its gifts surface late and come back changed.

Where the older texts tie the eighth to loss and to the length of life, they describe a domain of experience; they do not fix a fate. The discomfort is real, and so is the yield the tradition names beside it: depth, hidden knowledge in the plain sense of hidden, the odd authority of people who have come through something and stayed. The eighth deals in durations. Read it for what a life does with what it did not choose.
