Dusthāna · the difficult houses
The difficult houses of obstruction, upheaval, and loss, where planets are strained.
Reading
Dusthāna means a difficult place. The three are the houses 6, 8, and 12: the 6th of debt, illness, and enemies, the 8th of upheaval and the hidden, the 12th of loss and letting go. A planet standing in one of them is read as strained, its ordinary significations disturbed, and the tradition does not pretend otherwise.
The measure matters. These same houses carry the mokṣa thread, the 8th and 12th especially, and they hold the paradox the schools call viparīta rāja yoga, where the lords of the difficult houses, placed among themselves, can turn hardship into a strange rise. Held plainly, a dusthāna is a house of work and release, not a verdict on a life.
The difficult houses ask for work, not for dread.
