Karakāṁśa · the soul in the ninth-chart

The Karakāṁśa is the sign the Ātmakāraka occupies in the navamsha, the ninth divisional chart. The word joins kāraka, the significator, here the Ātmakāraka, with aṁśa, a division or portion, so it names the soul-significator’s navamsha portion.

Read as a kind of lagna within the D9, the Karakāṁśa is taken for the inclination of the soul, the inner direction a life leans toward. The tradition studies the planets and signs around it, and the houses counted from it, for the shape of that path. The twelfth from it is read for release, the fifth for past merit.

Because the Karakāṁśa depends on the Ātmakāraka, and the Ātmakāraka can shift under the seven- or eight-planet count, the Karakāṁśa can move with it. Classically it is one of the main tools for reading the soul’s leaning, held as a description of inclination and not a fixed destiny.
