Lagna · the ascendant

The lagna is the point of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Its sign and degree fix the first house, and the other eleven houses are counted from there. The tradition reads it as the body itself, the physical vehicle and the outward self, and as the reference from which everything else in the chart is measured.

Because the houses depend on it, a small error in the birth time moves the lagna and can shift every placement with it. Classically it is the first thing a reader establishes, before any planet is judged. Its ruler, the lagneśa, is read as the significator of the native’s health, direction, and general course.

Change the rising degree and you change the whole chart.

Each divisional chart carries its own lagna, recomputed for that harmonic, so the navāṁśa has a navāṁśa lagna and is read from it in turn. The natal rising sign stays primary, the ground the rest of the reading stands on.
