Vargottama · the same sign twice

Vargottama means “risen in the division.” A planet is vargottama when it occupies the same sign in the D1, the birth chart, and in the D9, the Navāṁśa. The lagna can be vargottama in the same way, when the ascending sign of the birth chart repeats as the ascendant of the ninth. The word marks a coincidence of sign across the two most-read charts.

The tradition reads this as strengthening. The Navāṁśa is where a planet is tested for whether it keeps the promise it makes in the birth chart, so a planet that holds its sign into the ninth is held to be doubly grounded, its dignity stated twice rather than shifting between the charts. The reading is one of steadiness and reliability, held measured, not a guarantee of any single outcome.
