Tanu bhāva is the body you arrived in, the house of the lagna, counted first because every other house is counted from it. Classically it holds a status no other bhāva shares: it is at once a kendra (angle) and a trikona (trine), pillar and blessing in the same seat. Its kāraka is Sūrya, the Sun, the unborrowed light the whole house answers to.

The tradition reads the first house for the vessel and its weather: physical constitution, temperament, complexion, the head and the face, the whole bearing the world meets before a word is spoken. It is the door of the entire chart. A graha placed here settles in rather than passing through, coloring vitality, the body’s general health, and the angle at which a life leans into itself. Where the lagna’s lord sits is read as where the self spends its strength.

Classically a strong first lord is said to make the chart self-propelled, and an afflicted one asks the life to build its confidence by hand. Neither reading is a verdict on the person. Meṣa (Aries) is the natural first sign, the ram already at the door, and the house keeps something of that forward lean. The first house is the instrument the rest of the chart is played on, and instruments can be tuned.
