Own sign · svakṣetra
A planet in a sign it rules, at home in its own ground.
Reading
Svakṣetra, own sign, is the plainest of the dignities: a planet sitting in one of the signs it rules. There the tradition reads it as comfortable and self-possessed, working with its own material rather than another’s. It is not the height of exaltation, but it is steady, a planet on home ground.
Most grahas rule two signs and so keep two homes; the Sun and Moon rule one each, Leo and Cancer. Mars owns Aries and Scorpio, Mercury Gemini and Virgo, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, Venus Taurus and Libra, Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius. A planet in any of its own signs is in svakṣetra.
In its own sign a planet is neither exalted nor strained, just at home.
In the ladder of dignities, own sign sits below mūlatrikoṇa and exaltation and above the neutral or difficult placements. A reader treats it as a quiet strength, a planet able to do its own work well.
