Karka is the one sign the Moon, Candra, rules outright, and the tradition reads the sign the way it reads the Moon itself: movable water (chara jala), the crab that carries its shelter on its back and steps sideways around a fight it cannot win. Classically Guru, Jupiter, sits exalted (uccha) here, and the old texts give the reason plainly: wisdom takes root best in ground that feeds it. The same books mark Maṅgala, Mars, fallen (nīcha) in Karka: force gone soft in water. Hold both, the way the tradition does.

This is the part of a chart read for what holds: people, the past, the temperature of every room it has ever slept in. Its virtue is the long memory of care, the one who knows how you take your tea and hears the lie when you say you’re fine. Its shadow, in the same reading, is the shell: protection that outlives the danger, moods that set the weather for a whole house, a past kept so warm it never closes.

As the natural fourth bhāva, Karka is glossed as the floor of the life: home, mother, the ground everything else stands on.
