Vṛśchika is fixed water, Sthira Jala: the well rather than the river, deep and covered and unmoved by weather. Maṅgala, Mars, rules it as his night-house, and the tradition reads the force that charges openly in Meṣa as going underground here, holding its charge instead of spending it. Candra, the Moon, falls to debilitation (nīcha) in this sign, and the old reasoning is almost tender: the open, reflecting mind suffers where nothing is allowed to rest on the surface. One school gives Ketu, the severed tail, a share in the rule, which only pulls the reading further toward what stays buried.
