Upapada · the marriage image (UL)

An ārūḍha is the image a house throws, found by counting from the house to its lord, then stepping the same distance on again. The Upapada Lagna, written UL, is the ārūḍha of the twelfth house, the reflection of the house of the bed, of what is given away, of what lies past the self.

In the Jaimini system the Upapada is read for marriage and for the spouse. The sign it falls in, the planets sitting with it, and the second house counted from it are taken as the picture of the partner and of how durable the union is held to be. Classically a benefic on the UL or aspecting it is read as steadying the marriage, a malefic as straining it.

The twelfth is loss and surrender; its image is the one you surrender the single life to.

This is a Jaimini device, not a substitute for the ordinary reading. The tradition weighs the Upapada alongside the seventh house and the navāṃśa, the ninth-part chart, rather than in place of them.
