Ātmakāraka · the soul significator

The Ātmakāraka is the planet at the highest degree within its sign, counted without regard to which sign holds it. The name joins ātman, the soul, with kāraka, significator, so it reads as the significator of the self. It belongs to Jaimini’s scheme of movable significators, the chara kārakas, and carries the soul’s deepest desire through the chart.

Because the seat is set by degree alone, the Ātmakāraka changes from chart to chart, and any planet can take it. Jaimini treats it as the most important graha in the reading, the one whose nature and placement color the whole life. Its sign in the navamsha, the Karakāṁśa, is read for the soul’s inner path.

Of every planet in the chart, this is the one the tradition reads as the soul itself.

The classical count runs across the seven visible planets. Some schools add Rāhu as an eighth candidate, measured by the degrees it has left to cross rather than those it has passed, which can move the Ātmakāraka to another planet. The codex keeps both counts rather than settling on one.
