Upachaya · the growing houses
The growing houses, which improve with time, effort, and age.
Reading
Upachaya means growth, or accumulation. The upachaya houses are 3, 6, 10, and 11, and the tradition reads them as ground that improves with time. What sits here starts small and builds, so these are counted the houses of effort, of overcoming, of career, and of gain.
The distinctive rule is that even malefics do well in an upachaya. Mars, Saturn, the Sun, or Rāhu placed here are read as growing stronger across life rather than damaging the house, their pressure turned into drive. Classically the 11th, the house of gains, is the culmination of the set, the place the growth is meant to arrive.
These houses pay out late, and to effort.
