Arcanum 8 · Strength

Classically the eighth key is Strength, though its number carries a quarrel worth keeping. Waite’s Rider-Waite-Smith order seats Strength at 8 and Justice at 11, where the older Marseille decks reverse the pair. The Matrix of Destiny inherits the RWS count, which sets this position under Leo, the fixed fire the Golden Dawn assigned to the card. Pamela Colman Smith’s plate shows a woman in white steadying a lion’s jaws with bare hands, a lemniscate resting above her head. The tradition reads the gesture as mastery through gentleness: appetite, anger, and instinct met with a soft hand rather than a whip.

In the Matrix an arcanum names an inheritance and a tendency, the ground a life keeps returning to, not a verdict set at birth. Read in a chart, the eighth is classically taken as the capacity to hold intensity, one’s own and other people’s, without flinching or striking first. At its ease it shows as patience with the animal, courage that looks like calm, power spent so quietly it passes for luck.

The shadow the sources name is the hand that tightens: force reached for where warmth would serve, or a strength so disowned it leaks out as pressure on everyone nearby. What the card asks, in the reading, is to befriend the lion instead of caging it. Fed on schedule, it stays tame. Caged, it spends its life planning the escape.
