Five of Pentacles · Pentacles · Earth
Snow past a lit window; the light nobody looks up at.
Reading
Two figures cross the snow beneath a lit stained-glass window. The man in front swings on two crutches, one foot bound in rags, the other leg drawn up behind him, pale blue robe patched yellow and green, head bandaged, a small bell at his throat, read since as a leper’s bell, a sound towns listened for so they could stand back. The woman behind him goes barefoot in the drift, hooded in an orange shawl flecked with pale flowers, green skirt beneath, head bowed almost to her chest. Above them the glass burns gold: five pentacles in the leading, one over two over two, green leaves and red berries around them. She never raises it. He raises his, and sees only snow.
Pamela Colman Smith made the light the warmest thing in the card, then set it at their backs.
The Golden Dawn gives this decan to Mercury in Taurus, under the old title Lord of Material Trouble: a quick mind doing slow arithmetic, the sum of not enough. The Four of Pentacles held its coin too tightly; the Five is what the holding could not prevent.
Upright, the tradition reads hardship, and more exactly exclusion: work gone cold, a body that stopped cooperating, the conviction that you are the only one out in this weather. The trouble is taken as real. The isolation is what the card questions, since the light is close, and unasked.
Reversed, the dial turns to the window: the thaw, help asked for. Others read hardship kept past its season, worn like a name, since setting it down would mean becoming a stranger to yourself.
Both keep walking. The glass stays lit behind them.
