Page of Pentacles · Pentacles · Earth
The coin held to the light; study that means to build.
Reading
Smith drew the Page standing still, barefoot in green grass strewn with small red and yellow flowers. A grove closes the left side; at the right, a ploughed strip of red furrows ruled in long ranks, and beyond it one blue-grey peak. The sky is flat unbroken yellow. His head is wrapped in a red cap whose long fold trails over his shoulder like a stole; the tunic beneath is green, belted. Both hands are raised and cupped, the pentacle sitting on his fingertips at eye level: a plain disc, a star drawn inside a circle, its face carrying the same yellow as the sky behind it. His face is tipped up into it. Waite says he moves slowly, insensible of what is about him. The whole picture is agriculture, and the boy is reading a coin.
The furrows are cut already. He is not the one holding the plough.
Pages are the apprentices of their suit, and this one apprentices to earth: work, craft, body, the material world named without embarrassment. Classically it is application. Scholarship, the manual opened at page one, the trade taken up from the bottom. Nobody expects the Page to be good yet. Only to keep looking.
Upright, the tradition reads a beginning that intends to become a skill: a course begun, an offer studied, curiosity with dirt under it.
Reversed, the same absorption stalls. Some readers name it study that never breaks ground, the plan admired while the season passes. Waite’s own list goes toward prodigality, spending what he has not yet made. One dial, two ends.
The coin teaches nothing by itself. The field does the teaching, once he sets it down.
