A woman stands alone in a vineyard under a flat yellow sky. Her pale gold gown, printed all over with small red blooms on stems, hangs in folds that have never had to move quickly; a crimson hood lies across her shoulders, a red cap over her curls. The vines press close on both sides, heavy with leaves and dark grapes, and nine gold coins sit among them: six to the picture’s left, three to the right. A falcon rides her gloved left hand, hooded in red and plumed, still because the hood keeps it still. Her right hand rests low on the vine, just above the topmost coin, and her eyes are lowered. Two trees stand behind the vines; at the far right, a house with a red roof. On bare ground by her hem, a snail.

Everything in the picture is under control, including the bird.

Pentacles is the suit of earth: work, ground, what a body can hold. The Golden Dawn seats this decan with Venus in Virgo and titles it Material Gain. Waite names it prudence, safety, accomplishment, and then, in a smaller word he never explains, discernment.

Upright, the tradition reads self-sufficiency that has earned its garden: plenty arranged for herself, enjoyed slowly, nobody else standing in it. The falcon is the appetite she has learned to hood.

Reversed, the garden becomes the wall. Readers name plenty that cannot be shared, refinement hardened into fastidiousness, safety kept so carefully it stopped being a life. Others read it kindly: the hood loosened, the bird gone up.

She is alone in the vineyard, and the card never says whether that is the reward or the price.
