Reading

Pamela Colman Smith put the ten cups where no one can reach them. They ride the rainbow in gold, five to either side of its crown, the arc banded pink over yellow against flat, cloudless blue. Below, a man and a woman stand with their backs to us on bare ochre ground: he in a red tunic and blue hose, she in blue, her crimson skirt trailing. His arm crosses her back; their outer arms are flung open at the arc. Two children dance to their right, hands joined, one in red and one in blue: their parents’ colors. A stream winds through green fields to a small house with a bright red roof. The scene is domestic; the miracle is weather.

Not one of the four is holding a cup.

The Golden Dawn seats this decan with Mars in Pisces and titles it Perfected Success: the hot planet lodged in the softest water. Ten is the count run out. Water at full count stops being a feeling and becomes a place to keep one. Something was fought for. Then it was lived in.

Upright, the tradition reads fulfillment with nothing left to add: the household at rest, feeling arriving somewhere it can stay. Nothing says how long it lasts.

Reversed, the portrait outlives what it was a portrait of: harmony kept up for the neighbors, the red roof still looking well from the road. Same rainbow, and nobody under it has raised their eyes in years.

The children never raise theirs at all. The card shows one face, the child in blue, turned toward the other. They were born under it; the sky has always looked like that.
