The year ahead · one per month

Twelve cards, one for each month, laid in a wheel or a straight line. A thirteenth is often set at the center for the theme of the whole year, the note the twelve are played against. The count starts where the year does: January for a calendar year, or the birthday month when the spread is pulled as a solar return, so the wheel turns from one birthday to the next.

Read it as a survey of the shape of the months, held loosely, never a set of dated predictions. What the twelve give is mood and movement: where the year lifts and where it goes quiet, which suit keeps returning, whether the majors cluster in one season. Run the cards in order to see the arc across the year, then read the theme card over all of them. A single month’s card is a weather note for that stretch, not an appointment on a day.

Variants change the count. Some readers draw thirteen months to match the lunar year and add a signifier, and some pull three cards for each month, a fuller thirty-six or thirty-nine, for readers who want more than one line per month. However many cards fall, the spread is a reading of the year’s movement, not a schedule of what will happen in it.
