Bharani · 13°20′–26°40′ Aries

Bharaṇī is the second of the twenty-seven nakṣatras, the lunar mansions, and the whole of it sits in Meṣa (Aries), from 13°20′ to 26°40′. Its symbol is the yoni, the bearing womb; its deity is Yama, lord of death, the first mortal to die and so the first to find the road every soul later walks. Birth and death keep one office here. Śukra (Venus) is its lord on the Vimśottarī clock, which sets desire at the center of both doors, and the tradition files Bharaṇī under Artha, the pursuit of means and sustenance.

Classically the mansion is read as carrying: pregnancy in the widest sense, the gestating of projects, people, and consequences to term, then delivering them whole. Older texts also assign it a power to take things away, to bear the soul across the threshold Yama keeps, which is why the one door reads as womb and as grave. Its gift is the strength to hold what is heavy and alive. Its shadow the tradition names as extremity: appetite and austerity trading places until the burden defines the bearer.

Its temperament is counted fierce, and the old texts respect rather than fear it. Yama is deadline, not cruelty. The mansion’s question is the midwife’s: what is actually trying to be born here, and will you carry it to term?
