Uttara Phalguni · 26°40′ Leo – 10°00′ Virgo

Uttara Phalguni is the twelfth nakshatra, the back legs of the bed where Purva Phalguni holds the front. The front legs prop up rest and pleasure; the back legs hold up the morning after, the promise made at the feast and now come due. Sūrya rules it on the Vimśottarī clock, and Aryaman presides: one of the Ādityas, the solar deity of contracts, hospitality, patronage, and the kept word.

The tradition classically reads this mansion as friendship raised to an institution. Aryaman governs marriage, alliance, and the noble obligation between people who have agreed to be bound; the older keyword lists run to alliance, patronage, promise, aid. The gift the texts name is reliability carried with warmth, help that arrives when it said it would, generosity with a spine under it. The shadow they name is the contract’s own: relationships administered instead of lived, kindness that keeps a ledger, warmth that cools once the terms are met.

The mansion spans Siṃha into Kanyā, royal warmth handed to working service, which is why its assigned puruṣārtha is moksha rather than pleasure or gain, the liberation found in keeping faith with others. Jyotiṣa counts it among the most favorable stars for unions of every kind, for charity, for anything meant to last. Aryaman’s question sits under all of it: what have you promised, and does your life still answer for it?
