The Root Centre · The motor at the base, the pressure that fuels everything above.

The Root sits at the very bottom of the bodygraph. It is a motor, one of four (heart, solar plexus, sacral, root), and the only one at the floor of the graph, so whatever it generates pushes upward into everything above. It holds nine gates, each reaching up or across into a neighbor. Three feed the Sacral, through the channels of Mutation, Concentration and Maturation; three feed the Spleen, through Judgment, Struggle and Transformation; three feed the Solar Plexus, through Synthesis, Recognition and Emoting. One of them, gate 41, is where the whole mandala begins, fixed at two degrees of Aquarius, so the wheel of sixty-four takes its first step here at the base.

The I Ching gives the floor its range. Gate 52 is Keeping Still, the Mountain, stillness held at the bottom of things. Gate 41 is Decrease, the low point of a cycle that empties before it fills. Gate 38 is Opposition, the friction of pulling against, and gate 54 the Marrying Maiden, the climb that rises by attaching upward. Under all nine runs one current: pressure, the squeeze that becomes drive, the discomfort a person moves to be rid of.

Defined is not better here, and open is not lacking. A defined Root, practitioners read, meets that pressure at a steady rate, a fixed clock of adrenaline a person learns to run on. An open Root takes in the pressure of whoever is near and amplifies it, which reads a room’s urgency with real accuracy and, left unwatched, becomes a hurry that was never one’s own, the rush to clear the desk just to be free of the feeling. The pressure to be done is not the same as something needing doing. The base holds the mountain’s stillness as readily as the sprint.
