The Throat · Where thought and feeling become speech and act.

The throat is the third centre down the bodygraph, set just under the two centres of mind, and it is the only place in the chart where anything becomes real. Thought, feeling, identity, instinct: none of it reaches the world until it passes here, as speech or as action. Practitioners read it as the seat of the voice and of manifestation at once.

Nothing in the chart is real until it passes the throat.

It runs no engine of its own, and that absence is the mechanical heart of the matter. The throat holds eleven gates, more than any other centre, and six of the other centres wire into it, yet its power is always borrowed. When a motor centre, the heart, the emotional solar plexus, the sacral, or the root, connects up to the throat, the chart reads as built to initiate, to speak and set things moving. When no motor reaches it, the voice waits to be met before it can manifest. The system reads a person’s type in large part off this one piece of wiring.

The I Ching under the gates keeps saying the same thing in different keys. Gate 45 carries hexagram 45, Gathering Together, the voice that convenes a group; gate 31, Influence, leadership by what is said rather than what is forced; gate 56, the Wanderer, who earns a place by telling the tale well.

Defined, the throat is a fixed and reliable channel, a consistent way of speaking and making, the same voice available every day. Open, it is receptive and conditionable, taking in how everyone around it speaks and amplifying them, able to sound like the whole room. Neither is the better instrument. Everywhere else in the bodygraph is potential; the throat is where it turns into something the world can hear.
