The throat gate of the present tense, awareness so complete it becomes its own kind of presence.

Reading

Gate 20 sits in the Throat, the centre where the body’s knowing becomes audible, and three channels leave it, each tied to a different source. 10–20, Awakening, runs up to the G Centre and the self. 20–34, Charisma, drops to the Sacral and its power. 20–57, the Brainwave, reaches the Spleen and its intuition. Whatever the rest of the bodygraph holds, this is where it tends to surface, and it surfaces in the present tense.

Awareness with nowhere to arrive but now.

Its hexagram is the twentieth, Guān, usually rendered Contemplation, or Viewing. Wind moves over the earth, crossing every surface without settling on one: the classical image for a gaze that takes in the whole and misses nothing. The word holds a double sense, to watch and to be watched, the tower you climb to see from and the same tower everyone below can see. The three crosses say as much from their angles: the Sleeping Phoenix at the right, the Now at the juxtaposition, Duality at the left.

On the wheel gate 20 stands twenty-second of the sixty-four, opening at the first degree of the Twins; directly across sits gate 34, pure Sacral power, which is also its Charisma partner. The one gate it faces on the mandala is the one it can most fully join: awareness meeting force.

Carried well, this is presence, the person entirely here, the word that lands because it is true in this exact moment. Carried thin, it narrates the moment instead of entering it, or holds at ‘I am’ and never becomes ‘I do’. The system reads gate 20 as awareness looking for its now. Given somewhere to land, it is simply the most present thing in the room.
