Gate 21 · Biting Through

Gate 21 sits in the Heart, the small motor of willpower and the ego’s promise. It forms one channel, 21–45, the Money Line, which runs up to gate 45 in the Throat. The mechanic is blunt: will in one centre, the voice of whoever holds the territory in the other, and between them a claim on resources plus the nerve to say it out loud.

The I Ching names hexagram 21 Shì Kè, Biting Through. Fire over thunder, and in the middle of the jaws an obstruction that has to be bitten through before anything can be eaten. The classical image is legal, the old kings making the laws firm and the penalties clear. Nothing here is resolved by wishing the obstacle away. Something has to close on it.

That is the honest shape of this gate. Practitioners read it as control of the material domain: the hand on the household, the hunt, the budget, the ground a person stands on. Held well, it is the will that clears an obstruction so other people can eat, and it does not need to be thanked for that. Held badly, the same jaw closes on empty air. Control kept up out of habit, gripping what was never resisting in the first place.

Thirteenth station on the wheel, opening at 9°30′ of Aries, it sits opposite gate 48 in the Spleen as its programming partner. The crosses it carries name the cost plainly: Tension on the right angle, Control in juxtaposition, Endeavor on the left. The teeth come with the gate. Whether there is anything in the jaws is the whole of the work.
