Gate 4 · The Answer Before the Proof
The mind's reply to doubt, offered as a formula and only ever a hypothesis until time has tested it.
Reading
Gate 4 sits in the Ajna, the centre where the mind builds concepts, and reaches up to the Head through the channel of Logic, 4 to 63. The traffic in that channel has a direction you can feel: the Head presses down with doubt, and the Ajna hands something back.
The answer arrives before the proof does.
Its hexagram is the fourth of the King Wen sequence, Mêng, given in English as Youthful Folly. Water below, mountain above: a spring at the foot of the rock, already running before it knows where. The old text is exact about the etiquette. The young fool goes to the teacher, the teacher replies once, and a second and third asking is pestering, so the oracle goes quiet. Ask well, then live with the answer long enough to find out whether it holds.
That is the mechanism the system reads here. Formulization: a possible answer produced under the pressure of doubt. The incarnation crosses keyed to this gate carry the same act in their names, Explanation at the right angle, Formulization in juxtaposition, Revolution at the left. On the wheel it opens thirty-sixth of the sixty-four, facing gate 49 in the Solar Plexus as its polar partner, mental formula across from felt upheaval.
Carried well, the gift is nerve: putting a formula on the table where a question was sitting, and holding it as a hypothesis instead of a verdict. In shadow, the same formula gets defended before it has been lived, and the doubt underneath is quietened by whoever agrees fastest. A spring at the foot of a mountain has a long way to run before anyone calls it a river.
