Gate 48 · The Depth of the Well

Gate 48 sits in the Spleen, the awareness center that reads instinct, health, and survival in the present tense. It runs on the collective’s logic, and it reaches up to Gate 16 in the Throat through the channel the bodygraph calls the Wavelength: 48 holds the depth, 16 supplies the skill and the enthusiasm that give that depth a voice. Apart, the depth stays underground. Joined, it becomes talent a community can hear.

The I Ching names its hexagram Jǐng, the Well. Wood lowered under water, the old mechanism that raises the water up: the town may be moved, the tradition holds, but the well cannot, and however many come to draw, the water never runs low. The same hexagram carries the warning. The rope can fail to reach the bottom; the jug can break before it clears the rim. The source was never the problem. The raising is.

The well is already full. The work is only the patient drawing.

Practitioners read the shadow here as the fear of inadequacy, the sense of not being deep enough or ready enough, the rope that never quite touches water. Held as a verdict, it stops the channel cold and the depth stays where no one can drink. Held as a signal, it is only the well asking to be finished.

The gift is depth that feeds without emptying. A well grows deeper by being drawn from, never shallower.
