Gate 40 · The Will to Provide

Gate 40 sits in the Heart, the willpower motor, the small engine of “I can” and “I will.” One channel leaves it: 37–40, named Community, dropping to the Solar Plexus through gate 37. The circuit works as a bargain. Gate 40 brings the will to labor and provide; gate 37 brings the warmth and sets the terms. One hand does the work, the other keeps the household fed.

The I Ching names its hexagram Deliverance: thunder standing over water, the storm that finally breaks and clears the heavy air. Its whole counsel is release. Once the tension of effort has built, the pressure has to discharge somewhere, and the old commentary tells the wise to pardon mistakes and forgive misdeeds now that the weather has turned.

A will can provide freely, then it has to come home to itself.

Read through that hexagram, the gate’s gift is provision offered without being extracted, and its shadow is the provider who never stops, who keeps supplying until resentment curdles the bargain. Practitioners hold that this will is real but not bottomless: it works in bursts, then needs to pull back and refill. The bodygraph treats the aloneness after giving as the recharge, the quiet where the storm settles, not a flaw to fix.

Deliverance is the rain itself, the release that lets a spent will begin again.
