Gate 18 · Decay, and the Instinct to Set It Right
The body's eye for what has gone wrong, and the patience to be asked before naming it.
Reading
Gate 18 sits in the Spleen, the centre the system treats as the body’s oldest awareness, and drops to the Root through the channel of Judgment, 18 to 58. Gate 58 carries the pressure, an appetite for things being alive and working well. Gate 18 carries the eye that finds where they have gone wrong. On its own it produces only the flaw, seen. It takes the Root under it to turn that seeing into work.
The body knows something is off long before it can say why.
The I Ching calls hexagram 18 Gǔ, Work on What Has Been Spoiled. The character shows a vessel with worms in it, food left standing. Mountain sits above wind, air stopped against stone and turning stale. The classical judgment is oddly cheerful about this: great success, worth crossing the great water, count three days before the turning and three days after. Rot is an opportunity, and the text is clear about whose rot it is. What has spoiled here was spoiled by those who came before, so the correction is inherited, and it is patient work rather than a strike.
The cross names attached to this position say the thing three ways: Service on the right angle, Correction in juxtaposition, Upheaval on the left. Offered where nobody asked, correction lands as upheaval, and that is the gate’s shadow, criticism running on its own momentum after the fault is already dealt with. On the wheel, 18 opens at 3°52′30″ of Libra, the forty-fourth station counting from gate 41, and sits directly opposite gate 17 in the Ajna. The mind up there holds the opinion. Down here the body holds the correction, and it aches until someone asks.
