Gate 17 · The Opinion That Earns Its Following

Gate 17 sits in the Ajna, the centre where the mind forms concepts, and drops to the Throat through the channel of Acceptance, 17 to 62. The system reads it as the gate of opinion: a mind that reaches a position and wants it spoken. On its own it only makes the answer. It takes gate 62 in the Throat, the patient one for detail, to turn that answer into something a listener can actually use.

Certainty is cheap; the looking that earned it is not.

Its hexagram is the seventeenth of the King Wen order, Suí, given as Following: thunder set inside the lake, a force that moves only by yielding to what surrounds it. The old text reads following as adaptation rather than command, and its image sends the leader indoors at dusk to rest, since anyone who means to be followed has first to know how to stop. That discipline is the whole of the gate. An opinion that has looked, tested, and waited to be asked gets taken up. An opinion that arrives to win is only tolerated.

On the wheel the gate opens at 3°52′30″ of Aries, twelfth of the sixty-four stations counting from gate 41, and it faces gate 18 in the Spleen, correction, as its polar partner. The two are read together and share one cross: Service on the right angle, Opinions in juxtaposition, Upheaval on the left. Service is the honest frame for this mind. The opinion becomes a gift the instant it stops needing to win.
