The read of a person that arrives before thought, instinct carrying all the body has already survived.

Reading

Gate 44 sits in the Spleen, the centre the bodygraph treats as instinct in the present tense, the fast bodily knowing of what is safe and what is not. It leaves that centre by one road: the channel 26–44, Surrender, running across to the Heart, where gate 26 holds the will at the other end. Instinct feeds the merchant. What the body reads about a person becomes the charge that goes out to move them.

The I Ching names its hexagram Gòu, Coming to Meet: five strong lines, and returning at the very bottom, one soft line that was not there a breath ago. Wind moving under heaven, touching everything it passes over. It is the figure of the unbidden encounter, something yielding that slips back in from below and meets the strong. Straight across the mandala is gate 44’s programming partner, gate 24, whose hexagram Fù, Return, is this same picture inverted: one strong line coming back where here a soft one does. Two readings of something arriving again from underneath, the return of light and the return of what was once pushed out.

The body remembers every ground it has stood on.

Carried in a life, that encounter is a read of people. The system holds that this gate meets someone and knows, before any reason arrives, whether the ground will hold, and it knows because the flesh keeps a record no argument can talk it out of. The gift is that nose for who can be trusted. The shadow is fear wearing memory’s coat, an old betrayal put on the face of a stranger who has done nothing yet. The instinct stays honest only as far as it will set down what it no longer needs to carry.
