Gate 42 · The Ripening of the Cycle

Gate 42 sits in the Sacral, the generative motor of the bodygraph, and forms a single channel downward to the Root through Gate 53, the one the system calls Maturation. Fifty-three opens a cycle; forty-two carries it to its close. Held together they are the full arc of an experience: begun, grown, and seen through to ripeness rather than dropped halfway.

A cycle is not finished until it has ripened.

Its hexagram in the I Ching is Increase, thunder stirring below and wind spreading above. The classical image is of a ruler who draws down from what stands high to enrich what lies low, so the whole field swells at once: a favorable season to undertake something, even to cross the great water. Increase, the old text holds, keeps its proper time. Pushed past that season it turns over and begins to drain.

That is the gate read whole. The gift practitioners find here is staying inside a cycle until it matures, the patience to let a thing finish growing before the next thing starts. The shadow is the opposite pull: beginnings that never close, a flight from the slow middle of the work, an increase forced when the season no longer carries it. The Sacral will keep offering life-force to whatever it is joined to; the discernment is knowing which cycle still deserves the fuel. Growth is not the same as never stopping. Gate 42 is the wisdom of the last turn, not the first.
