Gate 15 · Modesty

Gate 15 sits in the G Centre, the seat of identity and direction, and forms a single channel: 5–15, called Rhythm, dropping into the Sacral where gate 5 keeps the tempo. Across the wheel it faces gate 10, its programming partner and its twin in the same centre. Together they hold the solstice axis: gate 15 at the June solstice, gate 10 at December, the year’s two turns of light set opposite each other.

Its hexagram is the fifteenth of the King Wen sequence, Qiān, usually given as Modesty. A mountain sits beneath the earth: the lofty thing kept low, greatness that will not display itself. The old commentaries read the image as a leveller, the hand that reduces what is too much and adds to what is too little, weighing things until they come out equal.

That equalizing is the gate’s argument. Practitioners read gate 15 as a wide tolerance for the whole spread of human rhythms, an identity roomy enough to hold the extreme tempo and the odd one without ranking them. The system names both edges. Held, it reads as the love that levels a field, greatness carried with no flag on it. Loosened, the same width thins into no rhythm of its own, a self swept along at everyone else’s pace.

On the mandala it opens at 28°15′ Gemini, twenty-seventh of the sixty-four, and holds the June solstice at 0° Cancer within its span. Its crosses are named the Vessel of Love, Extremes, Prevention.

The mountain never announces its height. The ground is simply higher where it stands.
