Gate 13 · The Listener

Gate 13 sits in the G Centre, the seat of identity and direction, and reaches up to the Throat through the channel of the Prodigal, its partner gate 33. On the wheel it stands exactly opposite gate 7, its programming partner, the other half of the same seat: one gate leads a group forward, this one holds what the group has already lived.

What is confided is carried, never owned.

The I Ching calls hexagram 13 Tóng Rén, Fellowship with Men. Fire under heaven: a light that gathers people in the open, in daylight, rather than behind a wall. The classical image has the clans set in order and honest distinctions drawn between them, company that is kept deliberately.

Practitioners read this gate as the one people talk to. The cross names hold the same charge from both ends, Listening in the Juxtaposition and Masks in the Left Angle, and both are true at once. To be the person others confess to is to accumulate a store of everything they have lived, and to wear, in company, the face that keeps them talking.

Its channel partner is hexagram 33, Retreat, and that pairing is the whole mechanic. Fellowship gathered, then withdrawal, so that what was heard can be sorted and handed back as a direction worth following.

The gift is memory in the service of the group, the story kept until a way through it appears. The shadow is the same store held too long: secrets turned into leverage, or the past told so often it stands in for a future. The listener has to be willing to leave the room.
