Cross 13 · The gate of fellowship, carried three ways
The self that gathers what others confide, read three ways: the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx walks its own riddle, the Juxtaposition Cross of Listening keeps one fixed register, the Left Angle Cross of Masks wears the face that keeps a group talking.
Reading
Gate 13 sits in the G Centre, the seat of identity and direction, and forms a single channel, 13–33, the channel of the Prodigal, reaching up to the Throat. On the wheel it stands opposite gate 7, its programming partner, the other half of the same seat. As a Sun gate it anchors an incarnation cross: the fixed geometry a life is said to be born onto, named for the gates the Sun and Earth hold at birth and at the design instant.
The past gathered in company, then handed back as a way through.
The I Ching calls its hexagram Tóng Rén, Fellowship with Men. Fire under heaven, a light that gathers people in the open, in daylight, instead of behind a wall. The oldest reading sets the clans in order and draws honest distinctions between them, company kept on purpose.
The system reads that fellowship three ways. The Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx turns it inward, a life largely about its own process, a self that walks its own riddle before it can hold anyone else’s. The Juxtaposition Cross of Listening is the narrow lane, a fixed fate pressed into a single register: the one others confide in, keeping one face and one ear. The Left Angle Cross of Masks turns it outward, transpersonal, a life entangled with others, wearing in company the face that keeps them talking.
Practitioners hold the gift and the cost together. Carried well, this is memory kept in the service of a group, a story held until the way through it shows. Carried badly, it is the same store kept too long: what was confided turned into a hold over people, or the past repeated until it stands in for a future. Across all three angles the mechanic holds. A self defined by what it is trusted to keep stays honest only for as long as it hands the past back instead of hoarding it.
Where it rhymes
The same archetype, spoken in other systems.
Ketu
The tail that remembers, the past carried without being lived again, the same store this cross keeps for a group.
