Cross 41 · The Pressure That Imagines an Experience Before It Is Lived

Gate 41 sits in the Root, one of the two pressure centers, and it is the gate the whole mandala turns from: the fixed wheel of sixty-four opens here, at 02°00′ Aquarius, the first gate in the sequence. From the Root it reaches the Solar Plexus through the channel of Recognition, its pairing with gate 30. The pressure it supplies is appetite: the felt hope of an experience not yet lived, a desire that arrives before its object.

The I Ching calls its hexagram Decrease, the lake worn low beneath the mountain, the image of thinning the excess so the essential can rise. The old reading holds that a small thing offered sincerely brings fortune, that contraction is a form of storage. This is the mechanism of the gate. The fantasy is a decrease that precedes increase: one draws in, one imagines, and the imagining becomes the seed the coming experience grows from. Carried well, it is the first spark of every cycle of feeling. Carried poorly, the appetite feeds on itself and mistakes the dreamed experience for the lived one.

The system reads three ways to hold this. The Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected turns the fantasy inward, a process worked out largely for oneself. The Juxtaposition Cross of Fantasy runs one narrow lane, the fixed fate of the dreamer. The Left Angle Cross of the Alpha carries it outward and entangled: the fantasy that seeds a beginning others step into, the first pressure a collective moves from.
