Cross 49 · Where principle turns to revolution
The emotional yes and no of principle, and the change it forces when a bond breaks faith.
Reading
Gate 49 sits in the Solar Plexus, the emotional center, and drops to gate 19 in the Root to form the channel of Synthesis. The bodygraph reads this as tribal wiring: the principled yes and no that decides whether a bond holds, whether the group still keeps its word. Acceptance on one side, rejection on the other, and an emotional wave that has to crest before either can be trusted.
Change believed only on its own day.
Its hexagram is the forty-ninth of the I Ching, Gé, which Wilhelm renders as Revolution, or Molting. Fire sits inside the lake; water and fire subdue each other, and something gives. The old text is strict about timing: the change is believed only on its own day, and remorse fades only when it was needed rather than merely wanted. The image is an animal shedding its skin at the turn of the season, an old form left behind because it no longer fits.
To carry gate 49 is to feel where a principle has broken before it can be argued. The gift the tradition names is the reformer who senses the exact hour a thing must change. The shadow is the coup: severance without warning, rejection turned reflex, a bond ended on principle when a word would have served.
The cross family turns on where that revolution points. The Right Angle Cross of Explanation is a life mostly about its own process, working its principles out from the inside. The Juxtaposition Cross of Principles is a single fixed lane, the one who holds the line and little else. The Left Angle Cross of Revolution is transpersonal, a life whose changes are never only its own, and it wears the hexagram’s own name.
