Gate 2 · The Receptive
Direction received rather than seized, the ground that holds the course the body is already driving toward.
Reading
Gate 2 sits in the G Centre, the seat of identity and direction, and reaches down to the Sacral through the channel of the Beat, where gate 14 supplies the fuel. On the wheel it stands exactly opposite Gate 1, its programming partner: the same centre, the same Right Angle cross of the Sphinx, and between them the oldest pair in the I Ching.
Hexagram 2 is K’un, the Receptive. Six broken lines, pure earth, answering the six unbroken lines of hexagram 1, Ch’ien, the Creative. The classical image is the mare, who carries far and carries by following. Whoever takes the lead here loses the way; whoever follows finds it.
The mare goes far because she follows.
That is the mechanic practitioners read into gate 2. The bearing arrives before the reasons for it do, and the work is to keep it rather than argue it into being. Gate 14’s hexagram, Possession in Great Measure, holds the resource; the Beat couples that resource to a heading, power with somewhere to go.
The system names both edges of the gift. A direction others can steer by, held so lightly that nobody has to be convinced of it. And a stillness that thins into waiting, the ground lying open for whoever arrives with a plan and a loud voice. The three crosses carried at this gate keep the argument honest: the Sphinx, the Driver, Defiance. Riddle, helm, refusal.
Earth does not chase the seed. It is there when the seed falls.
