Gate 60 · The Node of Limitation

Gate 60 sits at the base of the bodygraph, in the Root, the pressure center that keeps the body’s pulse and its sense of what a limit costs. It reaches the Sacral through the channel of Mutation, the 3–60, where new energy sits on a jammed line and waits for the moment it can finally move.

A limit is what gives the growth its form.

Its hexagram is the sixtieth of the I Ching, 節, Jié, usually rendered Limitation. The character names the joint of a bamboo stalk, the hard node where the stem stops, thickens, then shoots higher. Wilhelm sets the image as water over the lake: a lake holds only so much, and it is the banks that give the water any shape at all. Take away every limit and there is only flooding.

The system reads gate 60 as the acceptance of limitation, a pressure to break past the boundary held against the discipline of waiting for the right timing. Its gift is the mutation that lands because it was held until it could take, form born of patience. Its shadow is that same charge frozen, a life that meets every limit as a wall and either rams it or sinks under it. Practitioners read the melancholy that rides with this gate as the pressure itself speaking, the low note that comes before the new one.

On the wheel it is the last of the sixty-four, closing the mandala at two degrees of Aquarius, the final node before the cycle turns over and gate 41 opens it again. Fitting for a gate whose crosses carry the name Limitation: the joint that halts the growth is the joint that lets it continue.
