Gate 56 · The Traveller's Tale
Experience gathered on the move and told as story, meaning made from the road rather than from proof.
Reading
Gate 56 sits in the Throat, the centre of voice and of doing, with a single channel out: 11–56, named Curiosity, running back to the mind in the Ajna. Gate 11 stocks the images; gate 56 is the mouth that turns them to speech, and the appetite that sends the mind looking for more to tell.
The stranger keeps nothing but the story.
Its hexagram is the fifty-sixth, Lǚ, given in English as The Wanderer. Fire rests on a mountain, Li above and Kên below: a grass fire that will not stay, running bright across the slope and moving on. The old commentaries read the traveller who owns no ground, a stranger among strangers, safe only while he stays modest and claims nothing. Success comes through smallness. The judgment even turns to law, the wise one clear about penalties, quick to close a case, dragging no lawsuit behind him on the road.
The structure keeps that shape. On the wheel gate 56 opens thirty-second of the sixty-four, in Cancer, opposite gate 60 in the Root, whose hexagram is Limitation, the banks that give wandering water a course. Its crosses name one life three ways: Laws at the right angle, Stimulation in juxtaposition, Distraction at the left.
Read well, this is the storyteller, experience gathered on the move and offered as something worth hearing, a life made into narrative that turns others toward the road. The shadow keeps the same address: belief mistaken for fact, the next stimulus chased in place of the last, motion confused for arrival. The fire is lovely because it does not stay. It makes a poor place to build a house.
