Gate 58 · Aliveness, and the Push to Make It Better

Gate 58 sits in the Root, the centre the bodygraph reads as pressure, the adrenal push that gets a body moving. It rises to the Spleen through the channel of Judgment, 58 to 18. Gate 58 is the fuel: an appetite for aliveness, for things being well made and doing their work. Gate 18 above it is the eye that finds the flaw. On its own the Root only supplies the charge, a restlessness that wants the world improved and cannot yet say how.

The aliveness comes first, then goes looking for something to set right.

The I Ching calls hexagram 58 Duì, the Joyous, Lake. One lake rests on another, the two keeping each other fresh, gladness that stays alive because it moves between things instead of pooling. The classical image has the wise gathering with friends for discussion and practice, joy put to work, learning taken as pleasure. Of the eight doubled trigrams it is the only one named for delight, and its delight is social and corrective.

The cross names read the drive three ways: Service on the right angle, Vitality in juxtaposition, Demands on the left. The gift and the trap sit in one line. Aliveness that serves becomes the love that improves whatever it touches; aliveness that only demands becomes the one who corrects for sport, dissatisfaction wearing the mask of standards. On the wheel gate 58 opens late, sixtieth of the sixty-four, at 3°52′30″ of Capricorn, directly across from gate 52 in the same Root, the mountain that keeps still. The stillest gate and the most restless share a floor.
