Gate 47 · Sense Made of the Past
The mind under pressure to make sense of the past, confusion held until it resolves into meaning.
Reading
Gate 47 sits in the Ajna, the centre of mental awareness, and it has one way out: the channel 47–64, Abstraction, reaching up to gate 64 in the Head. The wiring is the whole story. The pressure to make sense of things lives in the Head above, and gate 47 is the room where that pressure gets worked on. Raw experience arrives here confused, out of order, not yet meaning anything, and the mind sits with it, pressing, until it turns over.
The sense surfaces only once the confusion has done its work.
The I Ching calls its hexagram Kùn, Oppression, and draws it as a lake with the water drained out beneath it: Tui, the lake, standing over Kan, the water gone down and away. A dry basin. The classical image is exhaustion, being hemmed in, pressed down with nothing left to draw on. The old text does not read it as defeat, though. Success is still there for the one who holds their purpose through the drought; the warning it gives is only this, that in such a season there are words and they are not believed. Speech fails. Conviction carries.
That is the gate exactly. The system reads it as the mind under pressure to understand what it has lived, and the difficulty is that understanding cannot be rushed or argued into place. Pushed for an answer before the confusion has done its work, the gate manufactures a false one, or grinds the same question until it runs dry. Left to sit with the not-knowing, it lets sense surface on its own, and the dry lake fills. Its juxtaposition cross carries the very name the hexagram does, Oppression: the tradition keeps the difficulty in plain view rather than promising it away. The confusion is the process. Meaning arrives in its own season or not at all.
