Human Design · Gate 03 / 64
Gate 3 · Difficulty at the Beginning
Mutative pressure in the Sacral, the new thing pushing up through hard ground and the stall that comes before it breaks.
Reading
Gate 3 sits in the Sacral, one of the four motors, and drops to Gate 60 in the Root to form the channel of Mutation. Both ends are engines. The line carries pressure rather than direction, and pressure with nowhere to go is felt as being stuck.

Its hexagram is the third of the King Wen sequence, Zhun, usually given as Difficulty at the Beginning: thunder moving underneath water, a sprout with a stone on top of it. The image holds the moment after the seed cracks and before anything shows above ground, when the force is real but has not yet found the crack it will come through. The classical counsel is to hold rather than force the shoot. Order arrives out of the tangle in its own time, and the tangle is part of how it arrives.
The system reads the gate along the same grain. Its gift is starting what has no precedent, surviving the formless first stretch of a new thing and staying with it while it is still incoherent. Its shadow is that same energy read as a personal verdict: the stall taken as proof that nothing is happening, and the beginning walked away from a week before it would have broken through. Practitioners hold the three crosses keyed here, Laws, Mutation and Wishes, as one argument in three tempers.
On the wheel it runs from 26°22′30″ Aries into the first degrees of Taurus, and sits opposite Gate 50 in the Spleen, where an old order keeps its shape. Mutation and preservation face each other across the circle. Something new has to be pushed through something that already works.
